Power for the People work with some of the poorest communities, where people do not have secure access to food and lack the income to meet even their most basic needs. They suffer from hunger and malnutrition. They burn kerosene for light and wood for cooking, with the eye- and lung-diseases associated with these fuels. Women and young girls suffer most since they are entirely dependent on the breadwinner for all their own needs but also carry the burden of providing the family with food, water, warmth, light and shelter. They drop out of school to support themselves and their families, and often get forced into early marriage or lured into sex work and crime to make ends meet. Early pregnancy and HIV infection promote the cycle of poverty.
